about the artist

A self portrait at the ICA in Boston showing me silhouetted in a blue doorway, surrounded by darker walls. A horizontal stripe of city lights and two vertical supports of the glass windows are superimposed. It is a glass reflection.
self portrait, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. October 30, 2018
Joyce Audy Zarins attended Massachusetts College of Art, the University of New Hampshire, and completed her degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, Boston.  She wrote and illustrated children’s books and educational materials professionally, exhibited paintings to explore visual metaphors and a vocabulary of symbols, and produced site-specific environmental art.  In 1996 she discovered a passion for three-dimensional work in metal and has been working in three dimensional media ever since. In addition to fabricated steel and bronze sculpture she explores non-traditional materials creating abstract, conceptual, and realistic works that often refer to natural phenomena. Her work has been exhibited by museums in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Florida and at galleries and other exhibit venues in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and New England.

She has a passion for the outdoors and travels to experience the world, which reflects in her work.
